Lost Inside My Life by Lenny Bruce

Translated into English from the original Italian. The story follows the main character who falls in love for a younger boy and his journey into the depths of life brought about by his denial. Despite the difficult subject matters aboarded, drugs, prostitution, it is ultimately a romance, however tough the journey.

REVIEW

Lost Inside My Life

by Lenny Bruce

The original title of this book is Altri Viaggi, which translates as Other Trips and the author adopted Life Is A Journey as the working title, because it better described the content. Finally, changed to Lost Inside My Life, a poetic and worthy title.

The story tells of a journey through life, the life of Paoletto and Roby. The reader does not discover the narrator's name at the beginning, but it quickly becomes apparent as we listen to his introspection, he is lost. Later, as we follow the story we discover how lost the central character is and to what depths his life plummets.

This is without a doubt a beautiful and melancholic history of a profound love amidst tragedy and disaster in a hostile world. A struggle to overcome, accompanied by desperation, solitude, and the darkness of the soul. Yet, above all, even as it broke my heart I rejoiced in the time spent discovering the life of these two boys for as long as it lasted. Their story is ultimately a triumph, a magnificent joy, which they managed to share while destiny permitted.

The author's writing was often quite exquisite and provoked emotions and tears. The narrative reflection on life, love, their relationship, and that of those around them, as well as the world as it was in Italy in the seventies, was both absorbing and educational.

Readers' commented: " ...incredible beginning — sensitive, evocative. Strong character development and storytelling."

"You have succeeded in allowing me to actually feel the emotional rollercoaster here!  Excellent work!"

This story is a Shakespearean Tradgedy, or as close as I've ever found in an online gay themed story. It has all the elements. A tragic hero who is cursed by fate with a flaw, he's gay and loves a younger boy.

There is a struggle between good and evil. However, you look at it, a terrible fight is going on between love, desire, and what is right and good.

This struggle looks likely to lead to a tragic waste. The good risks being destroyed along with the bad, and the bad is only a perception of evil.

The external struggle with what is acceptable to society, friends, and family. The internal struggle our hero is tormented by.

There is catharsis, a lack of poetic justice, things look like ending badly for everyone, including the good guys. Their love touches the spiritual, although there are no ghosts or magic (which Shakespeare was fond of). There is perhaps a little comic relief, at least an occasional light moment. All the ingredients of a Shakespearean tragedy.

After reading this book, I feel I have lived the lives of the protagonists along with them and grown to love both characters, with all their faults and their good points. The consummation of their love for one another was moving, the end devastating, but this was a love affair that was ultimately a triumph!

A boy discovers his homosexuality. He condemns himself for an attempted seduction of a more youthful friend. He seriously risks dying when he decides to take drugs.

The social environments described are those of Italy in the 70s.

This boy’s life is pervaded with love, lessons, hardships, deaths, and special moments. The road is not pleasant.

It is a perilous journey that deals with drug use, repentance, prostitution, pain, forgiveness, and hopefully redemption.

Hustle by Talo Segura

Clinton sat down on the bed with an air of exhaustion and a feeling of desperation. Javier joined him on the bed. They sat side by side. "You want to talk?" Javier asked. And Clinton, the guy who always took care of his brother, who managed everything, but never told. He did. He talked to this complete stranger. Why? Perhaps because there was nothing to lose. They talked quietly together for an hour. They shared their stories. If Clinton didn't say everything, it was only because some things were personal to Morgan. He would have to decide if he wanted to reveal those things.

Hustle by Talo Segura

Two brothers move through life together, shuffled around from pillar to post. Trouble follows them everywhere and all they really have in life is each other. Clinton plays with his dice and always has a plan, Morgan always does what his older brother tells him.

They leave their rough childhood behind and get caught up in the escapades of South American drug trafficking. Clinton will do anything to keep them together, but it is Morgan who pays the price. Drugs, prostitution, and encounters with no one they can really trust. There is one goal, somehow to make it back to the States.

A new book by a new author

Arapiles

It's not so often that you stumble onto a really good author and this is a first book! The writing is a pleasure to read, the style is nicely polished, the use of language and narrative reflections on life, the descriptions of people and situations, excellent!  The little clues and the way eveything, all the details came together, is beautifully done. It is a wonderful and whistful tale full of emotion. Like a clever jigsaw puzzle which lends a certain satisfaction as each piece slots together and which in the end, when complete, reveals a picture.

Inkerman Street

by Arapiles

When Nigel discovers a kid in a skip outside his house, it turns out to be the genesis of a change of heart for the the older guy stuck in his lonely life after losing his partner years before.

This novella is an entanglement of relationships, past and present, histories that need to be resolved. No one can walk free without dealing with the personal tragedies that have left them imprisoned.

The encounter between Nigel and Andy is perhaps not the accident of chance that it appears at first. An erotic rollercoaster of sex leads our cast to resolution. A final mysterious and unexpected twist is eventually made apparent.

Mortaumal

by Rigby Taylor

Mortaumal [Mort-au-mal...Death to evil.]

One would expect a young man whose single mother skipped town a couple of hours after his birth, to have a few problems, but Mortaumal [Mort] doesn’t seem to, thanks to his grandfather. However, when that support is gone and foster parents fail, and there are nasty people demanding he do evil deeds...things begin to look pretty desperate.

From the age of ten to eighteen Mort lives with and meets an extraordinary variety of people, gets himself into and out of very hot water, sees rather too many people die, learns to defend himself both physically and mentally, and ends up unimpressed with humanity in general, while loving the few who come up to scratch.

This is a light-hearted, not too serious tale about death and dying, affection and callous indifference, independence and love somewhere in tropical Queensland. There’s sentiment but not sentimentality, social criticism, excitement, fun and a bit of everything else in a fast paced yarn that suggests ways to live that are more interesting and natural than those we see on our screens.

Dancing Bare

by Rigby Taylor

Dancing Bare is an amusing, thoughtful and informative tale about Rigby, an impossibly innocent young man who swaps the suffocating confines of middle class New Zealand for love and liberation in nineteen-sixties London and Europe. Revelling in the freedom conferred by anonymity, he becomes an actor, stripper, rent boy, lover, teacher and dedicated traveller through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, where travellers were uncommon and countries still retained many of the differences that made travelling so interesting.

Rigby meets with a wide variety of people, life styles and customs, eventually settling in Paris where the state did not consider his sexuality to be a criminal offence.

A moving and amusing story of hope and love, sex and sexuality, theatrical showmanship and artless innocence, laced with a little philosophical speculation as he wanders the world in pursuit of true love.

Review

This book is the story of an independent youth who leaves New Zealand in the nineteen-sixties to go to London, joins a small touring theatre company and embarks on adventurous trips around Britain, Europe, North Africa and the Near East. As the title “Dancing Bare” suggests, his performances are not limited to acting on stage. He enjoys being nude in front of audiences, is happy for them to take pleasure in seeing him naked, and to add to his earnings through “performing” for individuals he likes, mostly men.

Though he has many casual sexual encounters, the writing is not erotic or pornographic. There are no lingering lustful depictions of male anatomy, or thrust by thrust accounts of sexual activity. The hunger for sex and the need to assuage it help to drive the narrative forward, as are the observations about those he engages with, and his disappointments and successes in his acting, teaching, and performing nude.

The autobiography has much more to it than being an account of a libertine seeking pleasure through the swinging sixties and the self-indulgent seventies. As well as being an entertaining and engaging character, Rigby Taylor is very independent. He weighs up the world around him to develop his own outlook and philosophy. Whilst frequently enjoying company, he always remains something of an outsider. Certainly he is sexually liberal, but he does not take drugs or smoke, and rarely drinks alcohol. He takes some extraordinary risks, like crossing borders between hostile countries despite armed soldiers warnings.

The fast pace allows the book to cover many entertaining, amusing, and adventurous episodes, but such a wealth of experience inevitably comes at a cost. He reflects that: “I've always had to keep ‘closing doors’ because the present is as much as I can handle. Life is like hitch-hiking. You're on your own, not sure where you're going or if you'll get there. Everyone else seems to know who they are and where they’re headed as they zip past. Then you get a ride and you too are travelling with purpose, in company... until the car stops and you’re again out in the cold on the roadside, on your own...”

His determination to be true to himself and his own sense of right and wrong enliven his numerous and varied encounters, good and bad. In the final pages. before Rigby Taylor enters middle age, he has developed a desire for a “true friend”, someone with whom he could share common interests as well as a sexual relationship, someone for whom he would, perhaps, not simply be putting on a performance.

A satisfying and rewarding read.

About Rigby Taylor image

Rigby Taylor.

I live with my partner as naturally as possible in today’s world, on several forest acres in sub- tropical Queensland.

My first twenty-five years are recalled in a light-hearted memoir, Dancing Bare, in which I confess my misbehaviour in nineteen sixties London, Paris, Europe and North Africa.

I write the sort of stories I like to read, in which people who share my ideas, values, hopes and fears, cope bravely with dangers without compromising their principles. Stylistically, I want stories that are intelligent, reasonably fast-paced, and with sufficient but minimal description that doesn’t interrupt the unfolding plot, which is about more than just action. A bit of philosophising and the occasional polemic always please me.

I reckon fictional characters should be believable, not ‘supermen’ — just slightly larger than life. I also want the book to be well written and edited so I'm unaware I’m reading as I’m transported to a more interesting reality where there are at least a couple of people I can relate to. I don’t mind reading about sexual activity if it’s part of the plot and demonstrates character, but graphic sex bores me witless. I am disappointed that so many so-called ‘gay’ novels seem to be excuses for empty erotica.

I'm always slightly disappointed by ‘heroes’ who are unable to escape the compromises, petty disagreements, hopes, disappointments, mistakes, regrets, and the doubtful pleasures of wasteful consumerism that are destroying the planet.

My ‘heroes’ live in that world, but face their predicaments stoutly, understanding that more than enough is too much, while valuing what is truly valuable – a sustainable, living planet with clean air, water and soil, thus inspiring us lesser mortals to follow their example and strive with a little more perseverance to attain our goals. I realise I'm sometimes guilty of a bit of tub-thumping in my writing, but I like that in other writers because without strong convictions an author has little to offer readers apart from amusement.

Walking the Wild Side

by Nigel Gordon

What happens when a seventeen-year-old boy in a small market town accepts that he is gay, but knows of no other gay boys in his school or in the town. He goes looking for them, these days on the internet. That though can lead one into all sorts of places with all sorts of people. Sometimes, as Leo finds out, they are not very nice.

Review.

This story of a naive seventeen year old living in rural England and launching into the world of online gay pick-ups is a voyage of discovery that takes a wrong turn. The result is devastatingly dramatic as it revolves around a sado-masochistic bikers club to which our protagonist falls victim. The after effects of his drugged-up rape, a harrowing scene, make any subsequent relationship almost impossible.

The author proposes a juxtaposition between a loving gay relationship, which might be seen as a duplicate of a heterosexual relationship, even to the extent of the boy, being the younger partner, taking on the female role, contrasted with the tattooed bikers clan and their leader's view of the world. A view in which the master instructs, and in which experiencing pain is a necessary prelude to sexual release. The proselyte must not wimp out if he is to be included in their brotherhood.

Two very different questions about gay sexuality are touched upon. What are the roles and is a one to one romantic relationship valued? Is the sado-masochistic world of the bikers a valid alternative lifestyle? If I were to level any criticism it would be that the author and story touch upon fundamental questions, but very superficially. Those questions become the plot of what is a well written, but largely predictable drama. In the end, good triumphs over evil, but the resolution is quite simple and straightforward, and on the journey several lives have been destroyed.

About Nigel Gordon image
Nigel Gordon

Nigel Gordon was born in 1948 and spent most of his childhood in the English Black Country town of Wednesbury, where he went to school. After leaving school at fifteen he drifted around for a few years, working in a circus, theatre and films, the antique trade and at times as a rent boy. In his mid-twenties, he returned to full-time education initially to study law and accountancy. Due to illness, he had to give up his degree studies and somehow ended up working in the IT sector. He ended as a freelance consultant advising major European companies. In the meantime, he managed to obtain a Master's degree in IT and Batchelor degrees in Environmental Studies and General Science.

During his working life, he wrote a number of books on computer programming and on theatrical magic. He also taught Martial Arts, holding senior dan grades in a number of them.

He is now retired, a state of being which he finds somewhat annoying as he never has time to do everything he needs to get done. He has written a number of gay-themed short stories and two novels. At the time of writing, he has four gay-themed novels underway and a book on Fire Eating being edited to go to the press.

Currently, he spends his time writing fiction, binding books and gardening, when he is not helping friends getting a new business venture started.
